Categories
The process of coming up with categories into which to sort articles was by no means an easy one. When a Christian publication declares that the life, death, resurrection, and glory of Christ affects all of life, not merely our “spirituality”, one quickly runs into problems trying to decide how to practically organize articles while avoiding the grievous sin of adopting a categorization scheme which (loudly or softly) overemphasizes some aspects of life while not properly bringing attention to others.
In coming up with these categories, we have borrowed conceptions from theories of sphere sovereignty, which maintains that there exist certain “spheres” within society at the basis of which God directly exercises his sovereignty through his dispensing of common grace, grace that he pours upon human beings in order that we might bring about good in our lives – to inspire writers to write powerful stories, a scientist to have insight into the nature of creation, or a politician to wield his power for the pursuit of justice. Each of the categories below (with the exception of one) tries to trace itself back to some fundamental aspect of life that is, ultimately, unavoidable for any human being. One might be able to, as below, conceive of these categories in terms of transcendent concepts for which humankind has been seeking throughout history. Of course, there are many overlaps, and Revisions staff will try their best to make informed decisions when we read articles which may not seem to fit well into a single category or those which may seem equally fit for two or more; but for the most part, we believe that this categorization scheme will be useful for our purposes of engaging and reflecting upon ourselves and the world around us.
